Outdoor Pursuits
Walking: Ballynahinch Castle Hotel is the ideal base for walking holidays in the West of Ireland. Ramble through the beautiful Castle grounds with its miles of scenic river and lakeside walks of varying levels mapped out through the 450 acre Estate. Alternatively challenge yourself to a mountain hiking vacation if you are a more experienced walker the Maamturk Mountains and Twelve Bens are a hikers paradise.
 
Cycling: Bicyles are available for hire with the favoured route Roundstone fishing village and the picturesque beaches of Dog's Bay and Gurteen Bay. Picnic baskets can be arranged along with a blanket to enjoy lunch on the beach! Other suggested routes include The Old Bog Road to Clifden and scenic roads to Cashel Bay.
 
Fly Fishing
Ballynahinch Castle Hotel and Estate offers the very best of fly fishing in Ireland. The majestic Owenmore River, with fishing rights owned exclusively by Ballynahinch winds its way underneath the Castle for three kilometres until it reachs the wild Atlantic Ocean. All salmon and sea trout entering this magnificent system must swim up this river through the estate, giving Ballynahinch its world-renowned reputation as a famous salmon and sea trout fishery.
 
Golfing
Ballynahinch Castle is the perfect base for a golfing holiday in the West. Connemara Championship Links Course is only twelve miles from the hotel. A 27 hole course nestled between the mountains and the Atlantic Ocean it is an exhilarating golfing experience.
 
Other local courses include the parkland courses of Westport and Oughterard as well as the links courses of Connemara Isles and Galway Bay.
 
Clifden
Clifden, the capital of Connemara is a 12km drive from Ballynahinch Castle. A town steeped in history, it is home to the site of the first radio transmitter station from which Marconi exchanged the first transatlantic radio messages with a station in Nova Scotia in 1907. 3km south of Clifden is the crash landing site of the first transatlantic flight of Alcock and Brown (1919) and the monument to this historic achievement.
 
Today Clifden is a bustling town with designer shops, art gallerys, musueam as well a plenty of pubs with live music nightly. It is also home to the Connemara Pony Show and Clifden Arts Week which runs every September.
